What is my service?

A long time I have been looking and thinking about what I am really about. Currently I am reading The 7 Habits of Effective People. It can be a life changing book I think.

A quote from the chapter on Habit 7. 'Service is the rent we pay to live on earth".

I realized that the appropriate question to ask myself is "What is my service?" What do I strive for every day and with what should my actions be in line?

Thinking about what I really value in life is to have the opportunity for self development and to live a life with few risks to personal health. My service could be to bring this to other people. Since for me, this is the basis. When your personal health is safe and you have the the possibility and opportunities to develop yourself, the world will be a better place.

So my mission (the mission for my service and me) could be something like:

"Increasing the opportunities and possibilities for self-development and reducing the risks for personal safety and health for my family, for my community and for my world."

When writing this, I thought it was good to mention "family", "community" and "world" in here to make it clear for myself that this can and shall play on different levels. It is not only on a world level that this is my service, but it also guides close to home. And the oposite is valid as well.

For now, I am happy with this:

"Increasing the opportunities and possibilities for self-development and reducing the risks for personal safety and health for my family, for my community and for my world."

A next step is of course to see how to give more substance to this, how to put activities behind it.

But when I need to take decisons, I can check that my decisions are in line with my mission.
